Autumn Term 2 2022 - Starry Starry Night
15th October 2022
This week we have really enjoyed welcoming in some members of our local community to talk to us about their roles. We started the week with a special visit from Sergeant Georgia McCormack. She told us about the different ways that the police keep us safe and what we can do if we are feeling unsafe or if we are lost. She showed us some of the special equipment that she carries with her to help her to do her job. We asked lots of questions to find out more and later on in the afternoon, we thought carefully about what we had learnt and gathered all of our new knowledge on a defining thinking frame. Today, we enjoyed a visit from Father Rob who told us all about the Church, his job and his uniform. We asked lots of questions about who uses the Church, how it was built and why it has some special things in it.

What a busy week we have had in Buttercups Class! We have continued learning about our local area and have been working as a team to paint a large scale map of Horbling, thinking carefully about what we would see from a birds eye view. In maths, our focus has been comparison. We learnt and used new vocabulary such as heavier, lighter, equal and balanced as we used the balance scales to measure the ingredients needed to make cakes. We were all very excited to begin using our new Yoto player to listen to one of our focus stories from this term, Monkey Puzzle!
30th September 2022
Buttercups have had a wonderful start to the term! We have been learning all about ourselves, our families, where we live and the people who help us in our local area. We recently had a very exciting visit from two local firefighters, who talked to us about their role and how we can keep ourselves safe. They brought along one of their fire engines for us to explore and we were even able to have a go at using the hose to knock over a target. We had lots of questions that Harvey and his team were able to answer for us! This week, the children in Reception enjoyed a walk around Horbling village and a visit to the Church. They looked out for the street names along the way and spotted some of the key features of the village, such as the bus stop, the old post office and the spring. They used this knowledge to help them to create their own large-scale maps of our local area outside using chalks and a 3D map inside. We have also been busy collecting, sorting and counting autumnal objects as part of our maths learning, as well as learning lots of new sounds in our fun daily phonics sessions!
Autumn Term 1 2022 - We are Family!
Summer Term 2 2022 - Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!
This term in Buttercups, we will be learning about animals that live in rocks pools and on the seashore. We will be thinking about days out at the beach and compare our experiences with beach holidays in the past. We will find out more about animals that live in the sea and explore the importance of looking after the environment to keep living things safe. There will be opportunities to consider how to keep safe at the beach and people who help us.

Summer Term 1 2022 - Planes, Trains and Automobiles
This half term, we are going on a fantastic journey to find out about different types of transport. We will think about the transport we have taken to get to school, into town or go on holiday and the similarities and differences between them. We will explore the local area, looking for and recording different types of vehicle that we see. We'll talk, draw and write about real and imaginary journeys, as well as learning to re-tell a story all about a rather interesting boat trip! As part of Understanding the World, we will explore floating and sinking using miniature boats and find out about friction by rolling toy cars down ramps. We will learn about the role of a crossing supervisor, the need for high visibility clothing and how to stay safe when out on a walk. We will be designing and making our own junk model vehicles, learning different ways to join materials and using thinking frames to help us consider the vehicles features as part of the planning process.

Summer Term 2021 - Moon Zoom!
This term our topic is all about outer space! Below is a topic web showing some of the fantastic learning we will be doing this term.
Play is vital for children to make sense of the world. Through it they create relationships, explore emotions, develop language and practise imaginary roles. In this time of great uncertainty, play is a great way for your children to express their anxieties and hopes, while simultaneously spending time with their favourite people - YOU! During a school day, we devote valuable time to child initiated play in which the children can follow their own line of interest. The learning activities set should only form part of your day and we would encourage you to chunk them into short sessions whilst also offering opportunities for child initiated play inside and outside throughout the day. The timetable above gives only an example outline of how and when the activities could be completed.
